Deleuze and the Historiography of Art Criticism
“In this lecture, Dr. Cohen will discuss Deleuze (and Guattari) on art and criticism. Is intense art based on problem making and is this critical in and of itself, as itself? If art as such is the atypical expression-composition that comes to generate zones of potential feeling, thought, connection, a valorization of an event, creative uncertainty, then is criticism now a service provided to critical art? How to account for the co-existence of the critical and the institutional (that is, reproduced monuments)? If art and criticism are less models (except as instances of institutional “capture”) than performances, then how can art criticize its own “capture” by the teachable? To be more specific, the paper will discuss some relations between art-history and criticism, focusing on the current “extravaganza” called Pacific Standard Time, the Getty’s sponsorship of a yearlong historicization of Los Angeles-as-Art.”

The Genocide Awareness project, an anti-choice, anti-women’s rights organization, is coming to Simon Fraser University this Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th.
The Genocide Awareness Project puts forward the notion that choosing to end a pregnancy is equivalent to murder, and that abortion is comparable to genocides in Africa and World War II, the lynching of African-Americans, and the massacre of First Nations people.
If you are interested in participating in a counter-event, SFU’s Women’s Centre is looking for volunteers and allies to help by volunteering or simply attending the event.
You can contact the Women’s Centre by writing to womenctr@sfss.ca.
